Before you can take full of advantage of all that social media has to offer, you must begin by understanding the different types which exist today. Once you have a grasp on what exactly you are dealing with, you will be better equipped to use them to their ultimate potential.
Many people think that social media, in business terms, can only be used to promote your website. However it can take on a more active role including publishing or hosting duties. For example, sites like WordPress and Xanga offer simple yet excellent blogging programs. Any business can sign and use these sites to publish their own blogs. In some cases these blogs may actually serve as the company’s primary website. The truly great thing is that many of these social media sites come outfitted with a built-in target audience complete with shared interests.
Popular social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace play host to an endless list of both large and small businesses. With millions upon millions of registered users online every day they offer the ultimate in free exposure and publicity. It is incredibly easy to sign up for a profile page and most of these sites offer their services completely free of charge.
A slew of other options exist in the realm of social media. For example, social bookmarking sites offer users the opportunity to post and share links to their favorite websites. There is no rule that says you cannot set up a link to your own website. Some popular examples of such sites include Digg, StumbleUpon and Del.icio.us.
LinkedIn is a great social networking site which allows professionals to mix with one another as well as their clients. It’s a great place to make contacts and further develop professional relationships.
You can always decide to host your own social media programs on your own website. That would include anything from publishing a blog, to hosting a community forum, to posting informative podcasts or videos. It also gives online business leaders the chance to interact with their own clients on a more intimate level.
Marketing through social media is a timely investment however the rewards are noticeable. The fact that these social media outlets allow personal relationships to be built atop professional relationships makes them truly remarkable and unique opportunities.

The Internet is completely changing the way companies do business, most notably in the area of how they market. Marketing on the Internet is a whole new ballgame, with new strategies and tactics being developed and deployed daily. With the advent of Web 2.0, marketing across the Internet is becoming a more complex and sophisticated process. Web 2.0 incorporates rich media, social networking, and a number of other new strategies and technologies all designed to help the Internet marketer be more effective.
Despite all this new technology however, unless you are firmly rooted in the principles of solid advertising and marketing, your efforts will largely be unsuccessful. This is because the Internet provides a rich medium for marketing, but the classic principles still apply. Classic marketing theory extends as far back as the early 1900s, but really came into its own in the 60s when David Ogilvy published Ogilvy on Advertising.
Arguably the biggest take away from Ogilvy’s book was the concept of the Big Idea. The Big Idea is exactly what it says–the core message of your advertising effort. Without a big idea, advertising tends to ramble and become both disjointed and unfocused, completely losing its effect. Even for the best copywriters in the world, the process of coming up with a big idea is typically the hardest part of creating a successful advertising campaign.
Before you begin to do any marketing or advertising, spend some time and define what your Big Idea is. What are you trying to accomplish? What do you want the customer to do when they read your advertising? What action you want them to take and what do you want them to think about your offering? The Big Idea is not easy to come up with but it is an essential element of your advertising and marketing efforts. Without defining your Big Idea, you risk wasting tremendous dollars, time and energy on your marketing efforts.
To be an effective Internet marketer, you need to understand the current technologies that define the field today. However you also need to have a solid base in traditional advertising techniques and theory. Spend some time and do some research to find the concepts the old masters developed, and apply them to the new world of the Internet. Doing so will put you head and shoulders above the competition who typically do not take this important step.

As the Internet continues to evolve so does Internet marketing. For a new person it can be confusing to even understand exactly what it means to market on the Internet to make money.
Here are a few ways you can do Internet marketing to make money.
1. Internet marketing is simply a way to advertise a product or service online. One way to make money doing this is to sell advertising to other Internet marketers.
As you develop a high traffic website or blog it becomes valuable real estate. People will approach you with advertising opportunities and this can be a profitable way to make money.
2. Blogging is another way to promote an Internet business and a form of Internet marketing. Many people start blogs for fun and end up monetizing them by selling products or advertising for profit as well.
Blogging is a form of social networking and the most successful blogs are ones that people find useful and entertaining. It is only natural they will buy products on them if they are comfortable with the blog content.
3. Email marketing is a form of Internet marketing where you promote your product by email to opt in subscribers. Spamming today is illegal and therefore promoting to people who expect to hear from you is the only way to profitably make money with email marketing.
There are many other forms of Internet marketing to promote an Internet business. Some of these are free, and some of them cost money. However the only real way to make money on the Internet is to market your product where people can find it.
